Three new books forthcoming from Greater Good Science Center authors
November 19, 2008
First up: Greater Good magazine founder and executive editor Dacher's Kelter's Born to be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life. "In Born to Be Good, Dacher Keltner demonstrates that humans are not hardwired to lead lives that are 'nasty, brutish, and short'—we are in fact born to be good. He investigates an old mystery of human evolution: why have we evolved positive emotions like gratitude, amusement, awe, and compassion that promote ethical action and are the fabric of cooperative societies?" Due out January 2009 from Norton, you can pre-order it at Amazon.
Next: Greater Good Science Center chair Steven Hinshaw's The Triple Bind: Saving Teenage Girls from Today's Pressures, whose title pretty much says it all. Due out February 2009 from Random House. Pre-order it here. (Incidentally, Random House will also be publishing a book by our own Christine Carter on cultivating happiness in children; details TBA.)
Last and least, there's my book, The Daddy Shift: How Stay-at-Home Dads, Breadwinning Moms, and Shared Parenting are Transforming the American Family. "Forty years ago, a man who wanted to share child-care equally with his wife would have been called 'deviant' and a wife who wanted him to would have been condemned as an 'unnatural' mother," says Stephanie Coontz, author of Marriage, a History: How Love Conquered Marriage. "The Daddy Shift shows how far we have come and how much we have to gain by completing this revolution in marriage and parenthood." Due from Beacon Press in June 2009, you can pre-order it here.
We are also proud to announce that Norton will be publishing an anthology of the best essays of Greater Good at some point in 2009. We'll let you know when that appears.
